Climate emergency threatens to take out the very building blocks of our society and economy: how best to spend your philanthropic dollar

Top climate nonprofits & the state of climate philanthropy

There are SO many important causes to support (e.g. human rights, human health, ending poverty, ending wars, education, racial/social/economic justice, ending world hunger, animal welfare, and many more). They’re all 100% worth supporting.

But we are at risk of losing all of the gains we’ve made over the decades in these areas if we don’t address the overarching planetary emergency.

Because the planetary emergency is not only undermining all of these issues simultaneously – it’s threatening to take out the very building blocks of our society and economy.

Society relies on a healthy, stable biosphere for food, water, clean air, shelter, livelihoods, and much more…and our biosphere – this place we call home – is under attack.

What I’m trying to say is this: To have a chance at continuing to make progress on all of these important causes, society needs to tackle the climate crisis before it’s too late. Because unfortunately, there is a shot clock on this issue. And if we don’t start dedicating enough of our time, money, and skills to solving the climate crisis, it’s going to take all the other issues down with it.

(Keep in mind that, on the flip side, acting on climate helps improve nearly every other issue at the same time, including, as Bill McKibben recently noted, “reducing the power of autocrats, dictators, and thugs” like Putin.)

Now, given this reality, you’d hope that a significant amount of charitable donations would be flowing into nonprofits working to mitigate climate change (in part, to help make our corporations and governments go from being part of the problem to part of the solution as quickly as possible).

But climate nonprofits around the world received just $6 to $10 billion out of the $750 billion that was donated in 2020.

That means only 0.8% to 1.3% of charitable donations went to solving what is likely the biggest threat facing humanity today.

The US was even worse at a measly 0.4%.

We need to change this.

Today I’m sharing what I believe are some of the most effective climate nonprofits so folks who want to financially support climate action have a menu of ideas to explore based on their own theories of change or passions.

As always, this list is incomplete. There are thousands of amazing climate organizations not included. So if you don’t see your favorite on here, please share it in this google doc so I and others can check it out.

Y’all have helped shape all of these lists and I am updating them over time!

Multisolving Institute

Multisolving: one action, many benefits

Multisolving is a growing movement around the world. When people work together across sectors to address multiple problems with one policy or investment, they are multisolving.

A good example is how walkable cities help reduce emissions from transportation, provide equitable access to mobility, create healthier citizens, and help local businesses thrive. Multisolving is a way to look at the whole picture and help everyone. But multisolving isn’t always easy or simple.

That’s where we come in, with research, tools, and stories that help accelerate multisolving.

IEN convenes local, regional and national meetings on environmental and economic justice issues, and provides support, resources and referral to Indigenous communities and youth throughout primarily North America – and in recent years – globally.

If you’re interested in donating to 16 of the 26 organizations mentioned above with a single donation, you can do so with the WISHLY app (which was recently launched by a fellow Crowdsourcing Sustainability reader, Joanne Forster!).

I created a climate action “collection” on WISHLY for anyone who wants to support 16 of these effective climate organizations that are tackling the problem from various angles (I couldn’t add those that are 501(c)(4)s or have fiscal sponsors). And WISHLY is matching donations!

If you want to donate, you’ll need to:

  • Download the app with this link.
  • Create a profile.
  • Find the “Effective, holistic climate action” collection I just made which looks like this:

  • And donate! (they require $1 per org, so the minimum donation is $16.)

As far as I know, this is the first time you can create a unique collection of nonprofits to support and share with others – pretty cool!

Someone just made one for humanitarian aid in Ukraine. And if anyone makes one for saving/rebuilding democracy in the US, or wants to collaborate on one, please do let me know.

Much love,

Ryan

P.S. Crowdsourcing Sustainability is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit run by myself and 3 wonderful volunteers. If you believe this work is valuable, please consider investing in our work so we can keep increasing our climate impact. Large or small, your donation is deeply appreciated!
