The Colombian startup E-Dina has developed WaterLight, a portable lamp that generates electricity from saltwater through a process called ionization. This device uses the reaction between saltwater and internal magnesium and copper plates to produce power for light or to charge small devices via a USB port. It is designed as a sustainable and reliable energy alternative for off-grid communities, and a single liter of saltwater can provide up to 45 days of light.
How it works
- Saltwater is the key:Â The device uses saltwater as an electrolyte to trigger a chemical reaction.Â
- Ionization:Â The saltwater reacts with magnesium and copper plates inside the lamp to produce electricity.Â
- Extended power:Â With a 500-milliliter fill, the WaterLight can provide up to 45 days of light, with one light providing approximately 5,600 hours of total energy.Â
- Versatile power source:Â It can be used to provide light, charge small devices like mobile phones, or power a radio, making it a versatile tool for off-grid living.Â
- Cultural integration: The design is inspired by the traditional art of Colombia’s Wayúu community and is made with 100% recyclable materials.Â
